Solving Division Problems using Halving and Halving as a Strategy! - Sheetal and Christine.

Problem:
Its David’s birthday today. He brings a bag with 128 lollies to school. He divides them evenly between himself and 7 other friends. How many lollies did everyone get?
Step 1:  Read the question.
Step 2:  Put it into a maths equation: 128 ÷ 8 = _____
Step 3 :  Choose a strategy: Halving and Halving
Step 4: Solve the equation
128 ÷ 8 =
(Halve 28 to 64) ÷ (Halve 8 to 4) =
So 64 ÷ 4 =
(Halve 64 to 32) ÷ (Halve 4 to 2) =
So 32 ÷ 2 = 16
Learning Tip: Keep on halving until the equation becomes a basic fact.
