Young Leaders day!

YOUNG LEADERS DAY
On Thursday 19th May a small number of students from Reremoana attended the national young leaders day.
The students were nominated by our teachers. Approximately 750 other students from different schools attended too.
The speakers included Nick T a police officer, Dillion Boucher from the NZ Breakers team, Tumehe and Serena Rongunui, Pat Lam, The Laughing Samoans for some entertainment and Dave Atkinson a motivational speaker for schools. We also watched some special recorded messages from influential people like John Key, Brooke Fraser and Jason Gunn.
The Halogen Foundation wants to provide future leaders with the right values to make the right choices. All the messages given by the speakers were motivating and empowering making us realize that we can change things by developing great leadership skills.
All young people have the capacity to shine regardless of their race, gender, religion, rank or status.

On Thursday the 9th of may a group of year 7 and 8 students from Room 5 , 2 and 6 were selected to attend the National Young Leaders Day 2011(NYLD//11)at the ASB Show grounds.
The point of this day was to use motivational speakers to help us become better leaders. The motivational speakers were: Nick Tuitasi (ex-policeman) Dillon Boucher (Breakers and Pirates basketball player) Pat Bugley (St Johns ambulance volunteer and school speaker) Serena and Tuheme (What Now) Pat Lam ( Blues rugby coach) and Dave Atkinson (Attitude school speaker). Other than these speakers we also had entertainment such as playing with giant volleyballs and a live skit by comedians “The Laughing Samoans”
Overall it was a fun and educational day and inspired me to become a better leader and make better choices . I am sure I can say the same for the other students that attended this awesome day. Hopefully all of our year 7 and 8 students will have an opportunity like this.

National Young Leaders Day was a great chance for 15 Young Leaders from Reremoana School to go to the Logan Campbell centre for a day to listen to 5 different speakers. All of the speakers told us about different aspects to be a good leader. It was a great experience as it has changed plenty of decisions I make in my life. I really enjoyed listening to all the Speakers they told us how to be a good honest leader. I would definitely LOVE to have another opportunity like this again. This taught me a lot.

Writing about a special day!

The purpose of our writing was to describe a day we made special for another person. I chose to write about how I made mothers day special for my mother!

A loving person to be with that will always care for you no matter what. She looks after you and is a very big part of your life. One day to spend time looking after and caring for her. A day to remember.
Ping the pan went as eggs popped and splattered all over the place. Bacon sizzling around making an irresistible crispy edge around the outside. Toast popping everywhere ready to get served on the plate. As tropical juice bubbled away as I dropped two frozen ice cubes into it. Crumpets were flying into our plates getting drizzled with the richness of golden syrup.
“Delivery!” I called, knocking on the hard wooden door. She sat up with her eyes looking sad and exhausted wanting to go back to sleep. Once she saw my gift though, she smiled with astonishment. Happiness can be seen all over her face. Her nose trickled with the sweet smell of hot crispy bacon as it fills up the air space in her room.
As I tried to sit down on the end of the bed without knocking anything over or making my mums foot a pancake. I had to sit down as light as a silky white feather falling on the ground. As I gave my mum her present, she teared the rapping paper of so delicately like as if it was a glass jar about to break. Sitting right in front of her was a bar of sweet caramelo milk chocolate.
Just before I dropped my head on the soft fluffy pillow next to my mother. I said “ Happy mothers day mum” Enjoy breakfast.

MPSSA Cross Country

Last Thursday it was the MPSSA year 4-6 Cross Country Tournament. On this day all the best cross country athletes from all the schools in Manurewa competes to see who is the best runners in each age group. At the MPSSA Cross Country day I have learned new skills such as working the sound system. I also learnt to guide the athletes in the correct direction and also learned how to set up a good cross country course. This was a really fun day but at the same time hard work. The reason why we went was to help out Mr Fourie with the day. We also developed our leadership skills and learned to organise sports days. There is a lot more to it that you would think.  Only 4 students helped. It was me, Zach, Krisana and Louise. I am sure they have learnt just as much as I did. So I hope I get another opportunity later on the year.

School Cross Country

Cross Country
On the 6th of May was the annual Reremoana Cross Country day.
This is a day our entire school train for. We spent the last three weeks of term 1 and the first week of term 1 to prepare for this day. This year the year 7 students had to run 3km and the year 8 students 3.5km. This might not seem like a long way, but believe me it takes a lot of effort to complete a race that long. The race started and finished on the school ground. This year the finish line was nicely marked with orange flags.   Every student participated very well, and completed their races.

Orienteering!

ORIENTEERING
On Thursday the 5th of May, a group of year six to eight students went to an orienteering field day at Totara Park. This was a great opportunity to practise and display both our map reading skills and running skills. Orienteering is an exciting activity where you get given a map and have to follow it to the 18 given points. At these points you have to punch a code onto your map. It is an individual and a team event.
This was a very challenging 3.25km course at a wet and slippery Totara Park. Some students found it tough, but they persevered to complete the course.

Year 6 A girls: 2nd
Year 6 A boys: 1st
Year 7 A girls: 2nd
Year 7 A boys: 2nd

Congratulations to the year 7 and 8 teams who qualified to represent our school at the Auckland Orienteering Championships that will be held at Cornwall Park this week.

Life Education

Life Education
During week 1 and week 2 students from Room 5 has been visiting the life education van. On our first session Michelle taught us about making decisions and advertising. We broke up into groups and got given a product and we had to come up with an advertisement using strategies like pester power, music, slogans, repetition, humor and famous people.
During our second session we watched a video clip about a girl called Anna. Anna was a normal school girl who had some friends who tried to convince her to do the wrong things. She had to make choices, just like we have to do everyday. Unfortunately she made some wrong choices, but at the end she realized that she was doing the wrong things. Hopefully everyone has learned something from Anna. We used a “pull apart” torso called PAT. We took the body parts apart and put hem back again. We also learned about the functions of the different body parts.
During our last session Harold the giraffe came out and said “Hello,” and we told him about what we learnt throughout our visits to the life education van. We really enjoyed our visits. “Thanks, Michelle.”
We got given a nice Life education book. We can do lots of tasks about making choices and our body at home.
